June 10, 2004 - June 11, 2004 This was a fun, albeit short, run. I went 21 miles down the Myrtle Grove Sound thru the Snows Cut canal and down the Cape Fear River to within a mile or two of the Atlantic before cutting into the next part of the ICW canal system.
I entered Snow's Cut Canal when the current was running stronlyg OUT of it and trying to keep me out as well. I made only about 2 knots but had a feeling that the current would change mid way thru and it sure did. I was dragged along and placed soundly into the Cape Fear River. It was a great day for coming down the river - the chop was not bad and there was a gentle swell that felt like the ocean and indeed I was only about 2 miles from it when we reached our turn.
Lots of interesting things to look at in a commercial shipping channel. Ships going by, a ferry - which always strikes me as odd, but apparently it is economical to run these as the bridge is located quite a long way upstream.
The Coast Guard came by and I was sure they were going to board (again!) but this time they merely pointed out that I was headed for the wrong green marker! "Your marker", they said, "is over there. This green marker is OURS." I apologized they said "Oh, don't feel bad, people make that mistake all the time. That's why we are out here." Well, I didn't feel bad. I felt stupid. I can actually navigate pretty well and I completely flubbed. But to give myself some credit, 'My' marker was hard to see even from 'their' marker!
So into one of the many ICW canals again and I stopped at Southport Marina. Nice place, very tidy. Plus it was a scorching hot day and I still had to change Doublewide's oil and fuel filter. So covered in diesel fuel I was very happy for their great showers. I scrubbed until I was squeeky clean, got back on the boat, went to sleep and woke up bright and early for my next run! Tomorrow I will be in South Carolina! |
